The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full text from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a clearer identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our fans.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
The game lacks an announced launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as creation advances.
